Caring for your New Hydroseed Lawn
1/25/2006
THE KEY...Keeping it damp! You'll need to adjust your sprinklers based on weather conditions. Typically in cooler conditions the spray heads (used for smaller lawn areas - they don't rotate) should only run for 1-3minutes, three times per day. The rotor heads (used for larger lawn areas - they do rotate) should run for about 15-20 minutes, three times per day. These are just starting points - you will need to adjust based on weather and soil conditions. The idea is to keep the lawn bed damp but not puddly.
WEEDS...As hydroseed mulch and damp soil are perfect conditions for grass they are also provide perfect conditions for weeds. With hydroseeded lawns there will be a few weeds. You may pull these weeds by hand but please do not “weed & feed” your lawn for at least 2-3 months. The broadleaf herbicide will do damage to the baby grass plants. Keep up the fertilization schedule after the second one usually provided by CSGI. This regular fertilization will promote a strong and healthy lawn which help to “choke out” the weeds.
MOWING...Let your lawn bed dry out for a day or two prior to mowing for the first time. Otherwise you'll make ruts with the weight of the mower. Mow your new lawn when it reaches about 4”. Do not mow off more than 1/3 the height of the lawn (ie; if your lawn is 3” tall don’t remove more than 1”. In this example you would set your mower height to 2”-2 ˝”). A good rule for any lawn is to mow long and mow frequently. This will promote a thick healthy lawn. And, PLEASE, keep your mower blades sharp!
